At times, the beauties of existence are inevitably destined to fade; in youth, while the human body flaunts its beauty, it is at once transient and condemned to decline. My work in painting is the discovery of these fleeting “moments” of beauty that do not last long. For me, perceiving this process is only meaningful in the presence of a live model, and that is why I choose the young female body: a youthful form whose very sight is a direct confrontation with both beauty and impermanence. MUJŌ is the title of this series—a concept in Japanese culture close to what I had in mind: transience and impermanence.
